The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP)

The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) are demand oriented fellowship programmes designed to foster institutional development. The NFP is initiated and fully funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs from the budget for development cooperation. This ministry has contracted the Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in Higher Education (Nuffic) to administer the NFP.

The Purpose

The overall aim of the NFP is to help alleviate qualitative and quantitative shortages of skilled manpower and to do so within the framework of sustainable capacity-building directed towards reducing poverty in developing countries.

NFP sub-programmes

Fellowships for master`s degree programmes.

The Netherlands’ higher education sector offers a large number of international master’s degree programmes. They cover almost every field of study, allowing candidates to receive a postgraduate education and to earn a Dutch Master of Arts degree, a Master of Science degree, or a Professional Master’s degree.

NFP - fellowships for short courses.

Educational institutions in the Netherlands offer international short courses, providing professional training at post-secondary level in several fields of study. The courses lead to a Dutch certificate or diploma and their duration varies from two weeks to 12 months. An NFP fellowship, which is granted for the duration of the course, is intended to contribute towards the costs of living, to cover the costs of tuition fees, and visas, travel, insurance, etc.

NFP - Fellowships for PhD studies

PhD degrees can be pursued at 18 Dutch universities and institutes for international education. The maximum NFP budget available for a PhD study programme is EUR 74,000. This amount is intended as a contribution towards the costs of living and to cover the costs of visas, travel, insurance, etc.

NFP - refresher courses

The NFP provides funds for refresher courses for NFP alumni. The aim of refresher courses is to increase the impact and prolong the effect of earlier NFP-funded training. The maximum budget available for one refresher course is EUR 70,000. This amount is intended to cover the course costs, including insurance, travel costs of teaching staff and participants, salaries of teaching staff, and to contribute to the living costs of both the trainers and participants.

NFP - tailor-made training

A tailor-made training course is designed to meet specific mid-career staff development needs identified by the requesting organization. It does not lead to a regular degree or diploma. Tailor-made training courses are delivered by Dutch providers (or a consortium of providers, as long as the lead partner is a Dutch organization).
