Leiden University - Mandela Scholarships Fund.

Leiden University founded the Mandela Scholarship Fund to give South African (post-) graduate students the opportunity to study at Leiden University for a maximum period of one academic year.

Criteria and guidelines

Those eligible for a grant from the Mandela Scholarship Fund are (post-) graduate students from South Africa who would like to come to Leiden University to:

1) Undertake study in a Master’s degree programme or do research as part of their PhD thesis.

2) Upgrade or extend their knowledge in order to make a contribution towards the development of South Africa.

3) The Mandela Scholarship can only be awarded to candidates who are admitted to Leiden University. However, you can apply for admission to Leiden University and for this scholarship simultaneously.

4) Applicants should be permanent residents of South Africa and return to the country after their study period at Leiden University.

5) Applicants have to possess a thorough profi-ciency in written and spoken English and/or Dutch.
